I was so amazed at the lack of fear of these folks standing on the edge of the cliff fishing. The wind was blowing so hard I thought it was going to pick me up and throw me in the drink. If they fall they will be injured and maybe drowned. That must be very good fish. I took these shots with my Pentax K-100 D with the kit lens. Landscape mode, not RAW, ASA set to 400 1/350 @ f11. This was at 55 mm about 82 mm on a 35 mm camera. In camera shake reduction works very well

South Point

Yesterday was a good day for exploring with friends from the mainland, Louie, Illona Aguayo and Illona’s mom. We went to the most southern point in the U.S.A. here on the big island, South Point. From highway 11 you drive 12 miles on a good road, then a rough road, then a tough road and you come to these cliffs. No guard rail and it is about 25 feet to the rocks below. Wind blowing very hard. In the distance you can see the white structures, a wind farm in progress.These two kids are locals and locals have been coming here to fish for hundreds if not thousands of years. The wooden structures are for hauling really big fish, 200 plus pounds, up from the water. A very interesting place. I will go back.

Shipman House

In 1908 Bill Shipman bought this house for his wife as a birthday present. It is in beautiful location in downtown Hilo. Shipman's great granddaughter runs it as a B&B

Mystic Fiord

I took a lot of shots of this part of our Alaska cruise. This is one of my favorites.

Hawk Tower

The California poet Robinson Jeffers built Hawk Tower for his wife Una in 1920. It took him 4 years to complete the tower using stone brought up from the beach below the tower. Hawk Tower and Tor House are at Carmel Point not far from Monterey California.

I really love looking at and photographing old machinery. A few steps from Mission San Miguel is the Rios-Caledonia Adobe. I came upon this contraption while wandering about. I think it is or was a horse drawn spraying machine. At the far end of the rig is a gasoline powered pump. Pretty cool I think.

I have never been really happy with the way Photoshop converts color images to monochrome. I didn’t know why they never looked right either with channel mixer or mode control to grey scale. But I do know more about that now after discovering a software company called Silver Oxide.They make software filters that simulate several classic B&W films. This was a 6 mp raw file processed by Adobe Raw. I used the default results. Converted it to B&W with Silver Oxide’s Tri X filter with a simulated yellow filter on the lens. It runs on Macs and Windows. http://www.silveroxide.com
