Painted Church Altar

Carl see the posts. The painting on the back wall makes the church look much bigger than it is. The altar is the back wall of the church. There is a name for that kind of painting technique but I can't remember it right now.

Earnie,

It's "trompe l'oeil" (French for 'fool the eye') but it's a pretty unusual example. The technique is usually confined to hyper-realistic painting of subjects with shallow depth: rendering a bulletin board so you are tempted to try to pick the business cards off it. This is more like a theater backdrop, giving the illusion of great depth on a flat surface. The effect must be quite stunning when you walk into the little building and are confronted with a seemingly much larger interior.

It is stunning. I hope someday you can visit it. Ernie
