Mystic Fiords

The Seven Seas Navigator is a relatively small cruise ship, about 500 feet long 500 passengers. It can go places other big ones can’t.

One of areas accessible to smaller ships is the inside passage to Alaska and Mystic Fiords. When we got there the water was dead calm. After a bit the Captain stopped the ship and and it became dead quiet.

People walking about the deck were whispering. About this time I took this shot with my Pentax 645. The sound of the shutter and mirror clacking was like a shotgun blast. See this guy looking at me. A second later they were all looking at me.
I went back to my room and grabbed my 35 mm point and shoot. The rest of the shots of Mystic Fiords were done in smaller format.

The cliff walls were so close you could almost reach out and touch them

Taku Lodge #2

This is the guy that cooked our Salmon on his BBQ. Behind him maybe 25 feet is a pit. He throws the scraps there for the black bears. That way they stay away from him while he is cooking.

Taku Lodge

Here we are approaching the dock. The brown building in the back is the lodge. I think these are 1940 vintage Grumman Goose. As we approach the dock they are loading to take the previous visitors back to Juneau.

Taku Glacier

One of the really fun things we did on our Alaska cruise was a float plane trip to Taku Glacier Lodge. This is from the aircraft window as we are getting ready to land on the lake.

Kilauea Iki Crater

This crater was active in 1959. It is about a 2.5 mile hike to that break in the cliff wall in the distance.

Clouds Over The Crater

Taken from the same spot as yesterday's post. I swung the camera to my right and waited a few minutes as these storm clouds developed. Five minutes later it was raining. Exciting place to be.

Sulfer Vents

Yesterday was the first sunny day we have had in weeks. Finally a chance to try out my 50-200 mm lens on my K100D. I drove into Volcanos National Park and stopped at the Jaggar Observatory where there is a great view of the Kilauea Caldera
This is a 50 mm shot looking across the Kilauea Caldera showing the Halema’uma’u crater in the background, a crater in a crater.Click on the image to get a larger view. See the two yellow spots on the wall of the Halema’uma’u. Those are called sulfur banks.
This is a 200 mm shot from the same location. Sulfur laden steam deposits sulfur on the banks of the crater.
I drove clear around the Kilauea Caldera to the Halema’uma’u overlook. There is a fenced viewing platform on the edge of the crater but you cant see the sulfur vents as they are directly below the viewing platform. I had to go around the fence and get right on the edge to get this shot. Dumb, one slip and I am history.

Beached

I have been posting some of my "oldies" on the Yahoo Bromoil list. I am going to put a couple of them on here. This is a bromoil transfer about 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches printed on Arches 300 lb. watercolor paper. Two impressions with black lithographic ink.
