St. Benedict's Catholic Church

Also known as the painted church because of the fresco like painted walls and ceiling.
Built in 1875 it is the oldest Catholic church on the island. For a few years it was Father Damien's parish. Between 1899 and 1904 Father John Velge painted the interior.

Kailua-Kona

We took a short trip, 95 miles to Kailua-Kona. Two cruise ships in port. One from Southhampton England. These folks are on a 2 1/2 month around the world cruise, all three thousand of them. This is a very old, very large banyan tree.

Castello Di Giulio II

Built by Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere between the years 1471 and 1486. In 1503 Cardinal della Rovere was elected Pope. He chose the name Julius II as a reminiscence to Julius Caesar. Want to see more? Go here. http://members.tripod.com/romeartlover/Ostia.html

Peacock

Accidents sometimes make for interesting results. Sunday my daughter Jennifer and I were driving through the little town of Pahala. We drove to a lovely Buddhist temple that Jennifer and Angelo like to visit. There was a service in progress so out of respect I resisted taking pictures of the temple. But there were several very tame peacocks hanging out. I can't resist photographing them when ever I come upon one. So, seven quick shots and we were on our way home. I didn't even pixel peep. When I got home and downloaded the shots all I got were black squares. Somehow the camera setting was on manual instead of automatic. I had very seriously underexposed all seven shots. Using Photoshop and Camera Raw I was able to get an image. It is very strange looking, lots of grain. I like it, reminds me of a tapestry. It is about 16 by 9 inches. Click on it and you can see it bigger.

John Paul II

I we approach Easter my thoughts go back a couple of years to when I was in the RCIA process. My sponsor was Skip Driscoll and in a way of saying thanks for helping me I made this bromoil transfer for him. I scanned a small 2x3 inch carry-in-your-pocket card, made a big neg, made a matrix and then printed it on light gray watercolor paper with purple ink I mixed up.It is about 5x7 inches.

Upper Rainbow Falls B&W

You say you want to see it in black and white? OK here you go. I have program that converts a color image in to a monochrome image that somewhat resembles what it would have looked like if I would have shot it with TriX. This is 16 x 10.5 inches. Click on the image to see it bigger.

Leonard Misonne

Leonard Misonne, Belgian, 1870-1943 is my favorite pictorialist. This print is listed on Ebay with a starting bid of $2000. It is described as a 16 x 20 inch carbon print which means it is a Fresson print which was his process of choice. He loved to make pictures in stormy weather and those that know say he never ventured more than a couple of miles from his house. By the way I will not be bidding on this so it is all yours.

Boiling Pots Falls

We have had a lot of rain the last couple of weeks. It has let up a bit now and one morning dawned somewhat clear. I grabbed my camera and headed to downtown Hilo to check out Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots. A lot of water moving down the Wailoa river. The early morning sun from behind me helped by getting light into the shadows. I printed this 16 x 10.5 inches on Somerset Enhanced.

Anthuriums cont #3

The flower farm where these anthuriums are grown is Mountain View Anthuriums. It is about 2200 feet above sea level. Although anthuriums are grown all over this part of the big island the varieties are sensitive to temperature and amount of rainfall so the altitude of the farm determines what varieties do well. At 2200 feet they can grow the prized, Kozahara. It is a deep, deep red almost going to black.

Anthuriums

Not everybody knows what they are. They are a very unusual and beautiful kind of flower. They grow very well in this part of the big island. Our daughter and her husband and family grow them in Mountain View HI and ship them to the U.S. mainland and Canada. I love them. I am going to show you a few. This first one is a Pink Obake.
