Mystic Fiords
The Seven Seas Navigator is a relatively small cruise ship, about 500 feet long 500 passengers. It can go places other big ones can’t.
One of areas accessible to smaller ships is the inside passage to Alaska and Mystic Fiords. When we got there the water was dead calm. After a bit the Captain stopped the ship and and it became dead quiet.
People walking about the deck were whispering. About this time I took this shot with my Pentax 645. The sound of the shutter and mirror clacking was like a shotgun blast. See this guy looking at me. A second later they were all looking at me.
I went back to my room and grabbed my 35 mm point and shoot. The rest of the shots of Mystic Fiords were done in smaller format.
The cliff walls were so close you could almost reach out and touch them

Sulfer Vents
Yesterday was the first sunny day we have had in weeks. Finally a chance to try out my 50-200 mm lens on my K100D. I drove into Volcanos National Park and stopped at the Jaggar Observatory where there is a great view of the Kilauea Caldera
This is a 50 mm shot looking across the Kilauea Caldera showing the Halema’uma’u crater in the background, a crater in a crater.Click on the image to get a larger view. See the two yellow spots on the wall of the Halema’uma’u. Those are called sulfur banks.
This is a 200 mm shot from the same location. Sulfur laden steam deposits sulfur on the banks of the crater.
I drove clear around the Kilauea Caldera to the Halema’uma’u overlook. There is a fenced viewing platform on the edge of the crater but you cant see the sulfur vents as they are directly below the viewing platform. I had to go around the fence and get right on the edge to get this shot. Dumb, one slip and I am history.

Frank Macintosh 1939
This is the dinner menu from the S.S. Monterey Saturday June 24 1939. In the 1930 and 1940 Matson Cruise Lines commissioned 6 menu covers from Frank Macintosh. I like stuff Art Deco and I really like his work.
It is great fun to see what was considered fine dining in 1939. I know you cant read the text in small images but if you click on the image it will enlarge and you can read it. At least it did when I tested this post.
I few things I noted;
In the wine list they are offering a white Bordeaux from one of the best chateau , $6.00 for the bottle. I wonder how much $6.00 is today. This was a 1929 vintage wine offered in 1939. That is 10 years old. You don’t see many 10 year old white wines around today. Also I note that the wines are from Australia, France, Germany, Italy. This ship sailed from San Francisco without California wine. Strange.
Look at the Dinner menu.
Table Celery on Ice? That sounds good. For fish we have Flathead Sauté. What’s a Flathead. What about that Special, Sweetbreads in Casserole, that sounds yummy. How about a Saddle of Belgian Hare in Paprika Sauce. That is rabbit from Belgium. A Compote of Preserved Fruit in Syrup sounds good for dessert. Just open the can right here at the table.
I am glad to see that they served Kona coffee. I am going to the Smoking Room for my Demi Tassi
