Holy Ghost Celebration

On the Hamakua coast is the small town of Honoka'a. Honoka'a has a sizeable Portuguese population. Last Sunday was the Feast Of The Holy Ghost, a traditional Portuguese Catholic celebration. Since Vatican II The Holy Ghost is now called The Holy Spirit. We went there to be a part of the celebration. We were told that at one time the progression went all around the town. Now it only goes about 50 feet. It was raining so we didn't stay long but it was fun to see what it was all about.

June 17, Fathers Day we had a 4.5 earthquake. It hit about 3:00 in the morning. The quake opened up two riff zones, big cracks in the lava. The lava from the existing crater Pu'u O'o stopped flowing. The lava in the crater disappeared, the crater floor sunk 300 feet. July 3rd the lava began to return to the crater. But as we speak there is no surface flow. So the pictures that Dan got are not possible now. The park rangers think it will be weeks before we have surface flow again.

Walking across a broken lava field in the daylight is tricky at best. You can see where you are going, but one false step and you are down and injured. It really isn't "walking" it is more like hopping, leaping, jumping. Most folks walk to the lava in the late afternoon, get there when it is dark and then walk out in the dark using flashlights. Doing it that way gives them a bit of experience for the walk out. Gloria and Dan did it the other way. They walked in during the dark hours starting at around 4:00 AM. When they got to the lava, they were alone. Spooky.
Photographing lava in the dark is not easy. Digital cameras have a tough time autofocusing on the red/orange 2000 degree flowing rock. I will show you a couple of Dan's shots. In this one the lava is flowing to the cliff edge and falling into the water.

Gloria and Dan are friends of ours. They stayed with us for several days and spent a lot of time in the park. They are very active people and very adventurous. They got up very early one morning before light and hiked to the lava flow (in the dark) and took some excellent pictures. They stayed at the lava flow until daybreak and returned here to the house. Dan downloaded some of his images here on this computer. I will post a few over the next days. The first one, one of them, was taken by some guy who wandered up to them,and offered to take their picture with their camera. He was the only other person at the flow, just after sunrise. This is the spot where the lava flowed into the ocean.

Well now I learned that I have to take my G5 iMac to Kona to get it fixed as there is no authorized Apple repair place here in the Hilo area. That means I will be off line for a couple of weeks. I am going to try to figure some way to post on this computer. Later...

A Bit Worrisome

Yes this is a bit worrisome. Earthquakes woke Barbara up at 3:00 AM. I didn't feel a thing. Here is the report from the Volcano Observatory. This image was taken some months ago but it is pretty much the same now. This is the lava flowing into the ocean. It causes this plume. This shot was taken from Chain Of Craters Road, the road the park service just closed.

Early Morning Earthquake Swarm Beneath Kīlauea’s Upper East Rift Zone

About 70 shallow earthquakes in 2 hours occurred beneath the upper east rift zone
of Kīlauea early this morning. The swarm began at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 17 and
is ongoing. The earthquakes are centered 1 km (1 mile) southwest of Mauna Ulu and
are concentrated between 1.5 and 3 kilometers (1-2 miles) deep. As of 4:30 a.m.,
ten of the quakes had magnitudes greater than 3 and were felt by nearby residents.
All data so far is consistent with the event being a shallow intrusion of magma.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is watching the situation closely and has deployed
field crews to the scene.

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park has taken the following precautionary measures:
Chain of Craters road is closed. Crater Rim Drive is closed between Jaggar museum
and the Thurston lava tube parking lot. NPS personnel are sweeping both roads to
evacuate visitors.

Summary: A swarm of earthquakes and rapid deflation started at 2:15 a.m. in the
upper east rift zone near Mauna Ulu. The event is most likely an intrusion of magma.
Low magnitude earthquakes are continuing at a rate of one per minute. The summit
tiltmeter network recorded strong changes nearest the focus of earthquakes with
smaller responses in the summit caldera and even smaller at Pu`u `O`o vent.

The summit continues to expand at slow rates. Kilauea volcano continues to erupt
from the Pu`u `O`o vent on the East Rift Zone. Lava feeds Pu`u `O`o crater vents,
vents in collapse areas on the south side of Pu`u `O`o cone, and the PKK tube, which
feeds two lava tube systems, named the Petunia and Campout tubes. The Petunia flow
continues to advance and came over the top of Pulama pali about June 14. The Campout
tube is feeding widespread surface flows on the west side of the flow field and
the Poupou ocean entry.

The last 24 hours at Kilauea summit: An earthquake swarm started at 2:15 a.m. with
at least 70 quakes recorded in the first two hours. At least 10 of those quakes
were magnitude-3.0 or greater. As of this writing, earthquakes of approximately
magnitude-1.0 are occurring at a rate of one per minute. The earthquake activity
is centered between Mauna Ulu and Pauahi crater. The tiltmeter network recorded
significant deflation, consistent with extension across the upper east rift zone
and summit. Seismic tremor remains at low levels.

This house looks abandoned. I love the color of this one. You can see that there is some kind of addition on the back.

Green House

Up the street a ways from the brown house on the corner is this beauty. You will note that it is the same basic design as the brown house in a previous post. These houses were built by the plantation/mill owners for the employees. I believe, but I am not sure that these houses were moved here from one of the housing camps, perhaps after the mill closed.

House On The Corner

This is the first house on the corner of the street that has several of these plantation era design houses. Frank's house,(from a previous post) up the street a ways, is same design.

Frank's Place

I strolled up one of the main streets in Pahala photographing the plantation era houses on both sides of the street. Some occupied some deserted. An elderly gentleman spotted me and gestured to me to come closer. He was admiring my camera, I was shooting B&W with my 1950s Ikonta. He said he had one like it years ago. So we "talked story" for a while across the fence. He is 89 years old lived in this house all his life and just got down off the ladder, he is fixing his roof. His wife is 86, she was inside the house I guess. His parents came here in 1910 with the first wave of Filipinos to arrive to work in the cane. He attended school here until the 6th grade then went to work in the fields. He worked his way up to being one of the top mechanics in the mill. He retired at age 65. I was about to ask him if I could take his photograph when a friend arrived to talk to him so I said my good byes. I drove back down this street an hour later with my Pentax K 100D and made this shot. Frank was not around then. I will go back and visit him.

Wood Road Mountain

Wood Road takes you through the countryside of Pahala. This is a long dormant volcano. It has a name but I haven't found it yet.
