St Peter's Catholic Church

This is a really small church. Maybe it holds 10 people.

Kahaluu is not far from Kona.

Classic Hale

I have photographed this old plantation house many times. I think I posted it to the blog before as well. This print was made with the Kallitype process. It is toned in Palladium, about 10x7 inches.

Aerial Roots

These red stringy things are Aerial Roots. I saw this on an Ohia tree in the Volcanos National Park and I asked a park ranger what it was. She said that the tree’s natural root system was under stress, maybe it was damaged or maybe there was just not enough rain. Keep in mind that trees in the park grow in lava gravel. Very good drainage, maybe too good. So, when a tree senses that it is in trouble it sends out additional aerial roots high up on the trunk. This Ohia tree is in our yard, too close to the driveway I think.

Hoku Loa Graveyard

The grave stones and markers range from a pile of rocks with a wooden stake and a loop of beads without a name, to simple, large black slabs.

Most are large black slabs with no name or date.

Here there is a name but no date.

I think this is the latest grave up there, 1949 and one of few with a name.

Hoku Loa Congregational Church

This small stone church sits on a bluff overlooking the Black Sand Beach at Punalu’u about 55 miles South of Hilo. The church is dedicated to Henry Opukahaia, (1792-1818) the first Hawaiian Christian. He was living in Cornwell Connecticut in 1816 while there he became a devout Christian and worked very hard to convince the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to send missionaries to the Islands. Although he never lived to see it, the first Congregational missionaries arrived in Hawaii in 1820.

The church and the very old grave yard are surrounded by a low stone wall.

Great view of the Black Sand Beach from up there.

More Refinery

I find it interesting to think about the people that designed this machinery, built it, operated it. They knew what all this stuff did, how it did it any why it had to be done. Where are they now?

Ojai Refinery

Off the road to Ojai California is an abandoned oil refinery. Interesting shapes and colors to me.

Victoria Bridge

I am afraid of heights. Therefore bridges worry me. I would rather go under them than over them.
